I am wiped out. Two extra kids around the house is exhausting.
Having my niece and nephew over actually went fine. Today they’re being passed off to their grandmother for a while.) But it was extra tiring, and I feel like my groove it completely off. My productivity has been bluh for days. Gotta get back into it.
I don’t know if I mentioned it before (it’s not a secret or anything, but it won’t be relevant for a while), but I’m editing an anthology for Crossed Genres. It’s called Subversion: Science Fiction & Fantasy stories of fighting the status quo. It’s an invite-only anthology – no open submissions. I decided to do that when I realized a) I know a lot of talented writers I can ask to contribute, and b) open submissions? When would I have time to read all those? Anyway, the anthology is scheduled for release in Spring 2011, so there’s not too much more to talk about yet – I won’t even have an idea of what the TOC will be until around mid-November. I’m taking my time with this one, partly to make sure do it right and partly because that’s what I have time for!
Kay and I have been reading entries to the Science in My Fiction contest (1 week left to enter!). There’s some good stuff in there. We’re hoping for a nice big rush here at the end. Because we haven’t got enough to do, so pile on the reading!
Speaking of reading: The new iPhone comes out tomorrow! This is relevant because in all the reviews I’ve read, everyone seems to agree that the screen is a huge leap in quality, even from last year’s 3GS model (to say nothing of the 1st-gen model that we have). Apparently text is MUCh easier to read now – which makes Kay and I all kinds of happy since we do so much reading on our phones.
BTW, the title of the post is also the title of an original Star Trek episode – remember the one where they went to the planet where everyone was a Capone-era gangster? At the end of the ep, as they’re flying away, Bones confesses that he accidentally left his tricorder behind. Kirk says that it’s essentially the building block of their technology, and in a few years, the people of that planet “will be looking for a piece of our action!” I always remember this because the tricorder is part of the reason I’ve always wanted a device like the iPhone. I really think that the possibilities are practically limitless for handheld devices. And the new Facetime function makes me feel just a bit more Sci-Fi. =)
Unfortunately there may be a snag: in this article by Thomas Baekdal, is said that he’s been unable to upload ePub files that he created with Calibre. Since Calibre is what I use to create the ePub versions of Crossed Genres, does that mean I can’t get them on there? I will be royally pissed if this is the case. Also, does anyone know if iBook has an easy access to free ebook archives like Project Gutenberg?
As I mentioned in my last post, the next few months are going to be oh-so crazy for us. But they’re also going to be hella fun. Or else, damnit!
Here. Have some video of Al Franken laying the smackdown on the Supreme Court.
