My family just finished our annual series of holiday science experiments. Watch them! Better yet, duplicate them with your family! The balloon rocket, soda bottle ‘scuba’ diver, and flashlight ‘laser’ target practice are my favorites. In case you’re feeling doubly ambitious, here are eight more festive experiments:

I think most of our friends have heard that Bart and I want to adopt a child from foster care. We already have one great kid, but we think our little family would be even happier with one more. Because this is important, we’re taking our time with it – getting our apartment ready, getting [...]

The best thing at the playground is the fire pole, apparently. Bastian spent our entire excursion climbing stairs and sliding down the fire pole – no wonder he can eat like a teenager and stay so slim! In the end, he convinced me to give it a go… It was easier to hold onto the [...]

If I’m not a huge fan of annual retrospective posts, it’s because they usually read like boring litanies of snark and disappointment. Or worse: Obnoxiously falsetto cheer. Oh, how I loathe the perky… That said, I must admit that 2010 was an above average year for me. I’ve accomplished much, gotten away with more fun [...]

We were playing around with some rhyming words this morning when I realized – OMG, Bastian can read!! Of course, I immediately reached for my video camera… After that triumph, we watched ‘The Kung Fu Kid’ and I took Bastian ice skating for the first time. It was an amazing day.

A self portrait by Bastian I never can wait for the holidays to pass. Not that it’s an especially traumatic time, or anything, it just throws off my groove. If we lived on the other side of the world where this year-end stuff happens in summer, would I like it any better? I expect not. [...]

Well. When I made that earlier post, I was of the opinion that our day wouldn’t get any more interesting. My mistake! Bastian just kept the lols rofling all through the evening. While he was in the bath, he cheerfully remarked, “I’m made of meat!” I was simultaneously alarmed and impressed. Way to go, little [...]

This morning, I took Bastian to get flu shot #1 of 2, and he wowed the nurse by not only watching the injection, but by thanking her for helping his body fight germs. She gave him extra stickers. He’s already looking forward to flu shot #2 of 2 next month. When I dropped him back [...]
